Alkaline Pulping Committee, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings
R. R. Perrault
Slaker grits washing was first demonstrated over 30 years ago. Unwashed grits from the slaker classifier have a high alkalinity (high pH) because of the caustic produced in the slaker. A few states required grits washing in the early 1980’s but today, many states have regulations mandating grits washing before disposal to landfill. Most mills have investigated grits washing, with the majority of kraft mills now practicing some form of grits washing.
All causticizing equipment suppliers and many pulp mills were contacted to find the many different approaches that have been considered and implemented for grits washing. The following presentations were selected in early 1994 to point out the different alternatives available and to indicate the trend in the industry to wash and dispose of slaker grits.
