Influence of Fibre Morphology and Processing on the Paper Making Potential of Softwood Sulphate Pulp Fibres, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

L. Paavilainen

The research reviewed in this paper examines how wood fibre properties and cooking and bleaching affect the papermaking potential of softwood sulphate pulp fibres. Contrary to practise, reinforcement pulp quality (properties) was characterized through pulp fibre and network properties.

The results showed that the papermaking potential of softwood sulphate fibres mainly depends on wood fibre properties, especially cell wall thickness. Looking at the properties of pulp, fibre flexibility and collapsibility (responsible for the bonding potential of the fibres) increase but fibre strength decreases with decreasing cell wall thickness. A low S2 fibril angle has a favourable influence on fibre strength.
