Deinking Flexo Printed ONP in the Flotation Stage, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

For environmental and quality reasons, the use of flexographic printing for newspapers continues to grow. This has increased the amount of flexo containing old newsprint (ONP) in the recycling waste stream. At the same time, most new deinking systems are primarily flotation, processing both ONP and old magazines (OMG). These systems have a difficult time removing the very fine flexo inks in flotation. Consequently, there is a decrease in quality of the deinked pulp (DIP) being produced.

This paper will present information on a new chemical system that effectively removes flexo, as well as non-flexo, newsprint and magazine inks in the flotation stage. The system is a synergistic combination of surfactant, fatty acid, and water soluble polymer for which patents have been filed.
