Interstate Paper Uses Innovative Design in Their New TRS/NCG/BOD Reduction System, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Interstate Paper Company, Riceboro, Georgia installed a new TRS/NCG/BOD Reduction System to comply with The State of Georgia total reduced sulfur (TRS) regulations and to reduce BOD/VOC in the plant effluent. The new systems started up in late 1992. Each had to meet three requirements: 1) Bring the plant into compliance with present and future environmental regulations, 2) minimize energy usage, and, 3) be simple to operate. These guidelines required systems with unique design features not in general use in paper industry.
The blow heat recovery system and the foul condensate stripping column are designed to work together so no virgin steam is required for foul condensate stripping except a minimal amount of 150 psig for ejector operation. This is believed to be a first in the industry. The reasoning for the systems selected and several problems unique to the vacuum stripping system are discussed. A sophisticated control system that simplifies operation and an involved operating staff were key to the successful start-up of the system.
