Optimized Low Intensity Post Refining: Lower Energy and Superior Pulp Quality, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

J. Brad Cort, Marc J. Sabourin, Ronald L. Musselman

Low intensity post refining is of particular interest for displacing a portion of existing high consistency refining, since it offers significantly lower energy and enhanced pulp quality tailored to value-added newsprint and groundwood specialty grades. A patent pending refiner control method has proven extremely effective in reducing post refining intensity. Pilot plant studies were conducted using this dual flow / gap control method along with several mechanical machine modifications. Black spruce and balsam fir species blends were evaluated with conventional post refining, and post refining with the modified dual flow / gap control. The modified post refiner configuration maintained 18 – 30% higher tear and twice the long fiber content compared to conventional post refining.
