Poor wood chip level control in continuous digesters can lead to severe operating difficulties. In single-vessel di-gesters, conventional control methods are difficult to ap-ply and tune, and do not, in general, provide adequate control. In dual-vessel systems, control is even more dif-ficult because the process is multivariable. In this paper, the first industrial application of an adaptive multivariable dual-vessel continuous digester chip level control strategy based on generalized predictive control (GPC) is presented. Results from the industrial application indicate that GPC is able to provide close control of the chip level without excessive input manipulation.
