The Pulp Quality Roundtable will address how pulp quality is measured and assured in kraft pulp mills. Washed kraft brownstock is the raw material for a wide range of paper products. The panel will focus on brownstock quality from an operations standpoint by highlighting practices used routinely in the mills. Panelists will emphasize: . monitoring techniques that predict the pulp’s acceptability to downstream bleaching and/or papermaking operations l how quality data is utilized to optimize the cooking and washing operation Key qualities of kraft pulps are degree of delignification, strength, appearance, and residual chemical concentration. Panelists will discuss testing techniques, and whether techniques use on-line instruments or off-line lab methods. Handling of the resulting data will then be addressed. Are the data used to automatically tune cooking and washing process control systems, or do operators interpret results to make changes to the process?
