Polysulfide/AQ pulping is an accepted technology in the Japanese kraft pulping industry. The technology for preparation of polysulfide liquor is based on the auto-oxidation of sulfide over a carbon catalyst. The first polysulfide liquor installations were of the MOXY process in 1979. The technology was updated in 1987 by Chiyoda Corporation and Mitsubishi Paper Mills. There are now six mills pulping with polysulfide liquor. The mills benefit from increased pulp yields and the resulting lower cost per ton of unbleached pulp. The combination of polysulfide liquor and AQ for kraft pulping gives productivity increases of 5-6% with no noticeable effect on pulp quality or paper machine performance.
