My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling

The Finnish Pulp and Paper Research Institute
Peroxide bleached (Q-P-P) Common reed pilot pulp, made by the two-stage formic acid-peroxyformic (PFA) pulping method, was used for laboratory-scale papermaking together with birch and pine kraft TCF mill pulps. The fibre furnish contained 30% of pine pulp and varying amounts of birch and grass pulps. Optimization calculations showed that 30-50% of the short fibre material in the paper can be replaced with grass PFA pulp without sacrificing paper strength properties. The optical properties of the grass PFA pulp are superior to those of birch and pine kraft TCF pulps. Therefore, if more emphasis is put on the optical rather than the strength properties of the paper, the proportion of grass pulp can be increased to nearly 70%. Paper bulkiness is increased by the addition of grass PFA pulp.
