Chip quality control equipment has evolved from a stage of simple chip grading on a rotary screen top deck, through early disc screen designs, to roll screens and slot screens. The realization of the pulping benefits of true chip thickness control, coupled with new methods to process overtrick chips effectively, has encouraged the development of primary chip thickness control. Some current technologies draw on turn-of- the-Century concepts in slotted screens, and some have arisen in just the past 10 years. A series of criteria is offered to evaluate existing and new screens and methods.
