The benefits of over-thick wood processing have been well established for kraft and other pulping processes for more than 10 years. A new generation of over-thick wood processors, specifically chip conditioners, have been operating for several years at multiple installations, providing chip destructuring with lower operating and maintenance costs than conventional rechippers or chip slicers. Operational data from these installations have shown equal or better increases in pulp yield compared with existing technology, with significant reductions in wear and maintenance. This paper will discuss this new equipment and its operational methods, including special performance differences to the existing chip slicing technology.
