In response to increasing bleached market pulp prices and mounting environmental pressure, a totally chlorine free process to brighten kraft brown stock was developed at Longview Fibre Company. The brightening process was designed to use equipment from a decommissioned bleach plant. Process development began with a rigorous lab study at an outside laboratory. Lab data was then used to define the mill brightening process parameters. A process employing chelation with EDTA and brightening with hydrogen peroxide was trialed to achieve a nominal 50 TAPPI brightness level. The trial was quite successful and the mill is currently investigating the brightening process a permanent part of production. The resulting medium brightness pulp can be used stand alone or as a base for colored grades. The time from initial lab study to mill operation was only four months.
