This paper illustrates the methodology required, using current spreadsheet tools, to interface a modular simulator with on-line information. Conditioned process values are exported from the information system of a commercial fiber line process to a spreadsheet program. These values are then exported from the spreadsheet to the modular simulator. The modular simulator is controlled from within the spreadsheet and the results from the converged solution are automatically imported to the spreadsheet. The combination of process data, simulation results and plant cost data are used to determine optimum operating conditions. This information can then be sent to the mill process control equipment as optimized operating setpoints. Discussed in the paper are the effects of changing mill operating conditions based on cost optimum operating setpoints.
