In the application of simulation and even in the simple solution of a set of non-linear equations, the spreadsheet is often disregarded. A spreadsheet can be used to give the solution of many complex sets of equations with surprising ease. The method to do this is outlined for several simple sets of equations. It is then applied to the gas phase equilibria from a pyrolysis chemical recovery system. A material and energy balance for the process is included in the final spreadsheet to demonstrate its use as simulation tool. This process was also run as a part of a more complex block energy and material balance model of a neutral sulfite cooking process to verify the validity of the equation solving method. The drawbacks and pitfalls of this method of solution are then outlined.
