Earlier work in the laboratory and pilot plant has led to the development of a new deinking formulation. This new formulation is based on the reducing agent sodium hydrosulfite, in contrast to the conventional hydrogen peroxide-based technology. The “Reductive Deinking” chemistry effectively deinks at significantly lower alkali levels, moving away from the conditions that promote alkaline darkening when wood-based papers are present. Also, foam generation is enhanced which allows for lower surfactant charges with comparable flotation deinking. The results of two recent mill scale trials are presented.
