Chemical and Structural Studies on AB-Normal Lignin of Transgenic Plants with Antisense Cinnamyl Alcohol Dehydrogenase (CAD) Gene, 1996 Pulping Conference Proceedings

To confirm the chemical structure of abnormal lignin of trans-genic plants with antisense cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase gene, a mixture of coniferyl aldehyde and coniferyl alcohol was dehydroganated with horse radish peroxidase/H2 O2 . Four dimers were isolated and identified by spectroscopic analyses. The chemical structure of the compounds indicated that coni-feryl aldehyde could be coupled with each other and with coniferyl alcohol. The DHPs derived from mixture of coniferyl aldehyde and sinapaldehyde with coniferyl and sinapyl alcohols were prepared for model of the transgenic hardwood lignin. FT-IR and UV analyses showed that sinap aldehyde and sinapyl alcohol were effectively incorporated into these DHPs.
