Deinking agents play roles in wetting, ink removal, dispersion agglomeration and foam formation. Chemical A used in these studies has been successfully used as a primary deinking agent for mixed office waste. Chemicals B and C have been found to be useful additives for deinking of mixed office waste furnish. Controlling the level of these additives in A-B-C formulations can optimized performance in dispersion and agglomeration deinking processes, optimize foaming characteristics and decrease yield loss. In addition optimizing levels of chemicals B and C improves formulation stability and liquidity. A statistically designed mixture experiment was used to determine the optimum ratio of A:B:C for improved deinking of mixed Office waste. Key response variables were image analyses, ERIC, and brightness. Each response was analyzed to determine a predictive regression equation and to generate contour plots of predicted values. The focus of this poster will be the use of statistical design to optimize deinking formulation. An optimum ratio of A:B:C was found basis ink removal. The formulation developed basis this study was tested in a pilot mill and deinking plants. Results from laboratory tests, pilot tests and plant trials wereconsistent.
