Role of Polymers in Deinking of Mixed Paper, 1996 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A new deinking process is being studied to recycle low grades mixed papers. In the process, plastics present in the waste paper are transformed into scavengers for ink, and hydrophobe colloidal particles. The transformation takes place during the pulping stage where the polymers are exposed to liquors containing mineral spirit, sodium silicate, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. The investigation reveals that ink removal is temperature dependent, and it is also influenced by the pulping liquor composition. Adhesion of ink particles to the polymer substrates does not affect the glass transition temperature of the materials and the FTIR spectra of the samples.
