Kraft pulping to low kappa numbers is restricted by loss of yield and deterioration in fiber properties, both of which may be attributed to the wood raw material or the cooking conditions. In the present syudy, a normal pine log was divided into a normal wood fraction and fractions containing compression wood; all fractions were pulped under identical kraft pulping conditions. The properties of the pulp fibers and of the isolated residual lignin-carbohydrate complexes (RLCC) were characterized in order to observe any correlations.
