Reactivity of Lignin Condensed Units and its Implication in Alkaline Delignification, 1996 Pulping Conference Proceedings

The reactivity of a series of phenolic diphenylmethane (DPM) lignin model dimers has been examined n soda and kraft liquors, and in mild alkai-O2 solution in an attempt to understand the role of lignin condensation in the alkaline delignification process. These condensed dimers were shown to be rather stable in alkali, even at elevated temperatures in the absence of O2 . In contrast, they were sensitive to an alkali-O2 treatment, resulting in the formation of monomeric and oxidative coupling products. The latter reaction could be a factor in retarding the delignification process.
