Reducing the impact of "sticky" deposits on paper manufacture is critical for successfully recycling OCC. This paper reviews the case history of #12 Paper Machine at Longview Fiber Co. This machine produces light weight kraft papers at high speeds. The sticky deposit locations and the paper defects they cause are reviewed. A review of the many changes to #12 Machine is presented which covers acid to alkaline conversion and the use of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), roll coverings, felt cleaning showers, wire treatments, and some chemical prevention trial evaluations. OCC plant screening and cleaning changes are also reviewed. The end result of the 5 years of work is a 90+% reduction in machine downtime for deposits and roughly an 80+% reduction in millwide costs.
