As the reclaimed fiber stream becomes more adulterated more machinery will be needed (or machines that separate rubbish from fiber more efficiently will be needed) to remove the debris. The use of more equipment means that more energy will be used. Ways of reducing energy consumption need to be developed to allow the feasible reuse of such heavily contaminated fiber sources. The purpose of this analysis is to explore one possible way to decrease the energy needed to pulp reclaimed fibers. This study compares pulping old corrugated containers with and without sodium hydroxide to investigate the effect of caustic on pulping energy. The pulping operation was varied by using different pulping consistencies, adding different amounts of sodium hydroxide and changing the rotor speed. This paper summarizes and examines the test results.
