Pulping additives roundtable panelists will discuss the use of anthraquinone (AQ), polysulfide, and / or surfactants in their mills’ pulping processes. These additives have become more prevalent in alkaline pulping in recent years. They can improve yield, offsetting escalating wood costs; maintain yield and strength at lower kappa number, better preparing pulp for low chlorine and chlorine free bleaching sequences; reduce loading on recovery, increasing pulp production; and reduce rejects, improving pulp cleanliness. AQ, polysulfide, and surfactants can be used independently or in combination. The use of AQ and polysulfide can have a synergistic effect on pulp yield improvement. Surfactants improve liquor penetration rate into the chips, and might therefore increase the efficiency of AQ and polysulfide applications.
