The application of new organic bleach stabilizers in pressurized peroxide bleaching provides benefits over traditional approaches. The aggressive environment of high temperature and pressurized peroxide bleaching often requires the use of bleach stabilizers to improve performance. Metals management and bleach stabilization can reduce the negative impact transition metals have on bleach efficiency and viscosity. Traditional approaches to treating these stages involve the use of magnesium sulfate for stabilization or DTPA/EDTA in prior chelant stages for metals removal. New organic bleach stabilizers are formulated to provide improved metals management, brightness gain and higher peroxide residuals. Chelation evaluations reveal that they selectively chelate iron and manganese without removing valuable native magnesium. When introduced directly into the peroxide (pht , PO) stage, peroxide performance is improved when compared to an QPht or Q(PO) sequence. Organic bleach stabilizer technologies show potential benefits in pre-delignification or bleaching stages utilizing hydrogen peroxide.
