Design, Operation, and Adaptation of a Chip Handling System for a Changing Chip Supply, 1996 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Ponderay Newsprint Co.
The chip storage and handling system at Ponderay Newsprint Company was designed for economy, quality, and reliability to deal with an expected variable chip supply. The system has now been operational for seven years and has met all challenges satisfactorily. The system permits constant chip deliveries and species segregation, while allowing inventories to be kept low. Chip reclamation is adjustable and redundant so the chip mix can be controlled, even during equipment failures or maintenance. Chip screening is also adjustable to allow optimum chip quality for the production of TMP and Newsprint. Changes have been instituted during the past seven years to improve the system, and it is expected that it will meet Ponderay’s needs for many years to come.
