During the past few years great efforts have been made at different paper mills to increase the pulp yield without major investments. One of the reasons for this has been the very high cost of wood at mill sites. The increase in yield can be accomplished by i) increasing the kappa number of the pulp and ii) increasing the carbohydrate content of the pulp. Kraft pulping with the addition of anthraquinone (AQ) and polysulfide (PS) either individually or in combination provide options to improve the yield of linerboard pulps.
