This paper will discuss a group of higher-value by-products, including the commonly-recovered turpentine, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)2 tall oil, lignin and vanillin. The last by-product is most commonly made from sulfite waste liquor, but with unique technology, can be produced from Kraft black liquor. A brief outline of process operations and market values for each of the by-products is given.
