As mills convert their bleaching systems to Elementally Chlorine Free (ECF) sequences, the simplest solution is to increase the chlorine dioxide capacity. A typical mill bleaching softwood has available approximately 1.5% chlorine dioxide. This capacity would have to be increased to 4% to achieve ECF by the conventional approach. In this paper other options to achieving ECF bleaching, without increasing the chlorine dioxide capacity have been presented. Hydrogen peroxide has been used to substitute for chlorine dioxide, since it is readily available at the mill and minimum capital is required for its implementation. It will be very important to control the metal ion profile in pulps to optimize the performance of hydrogen peroxide. A(PDTMpA ) and (AQ)P were used to minimize the decomposition of the peroxide.
