Pitch and/or stickies are a continuing problem for the papermaker. These problems can occur in the pulp mill, on the paper machine, or even in the waste treatment operation. Chemistry has been developed that absorbs onto the hydrophobic particles, changing the surface properties of the particle. This paper discusses ways of taking advantage of this change in surface properties of pitch and/or stickies depending on the type of contaminant and the specific unit operations of the mill.
