The removal of COD is becoming the new standard for measuring the efficiency of brown stock washing lines. COD not only indicates the presence of total chemicals, but also the potential oxidizer consumption of those chemicals in the bleach plant or effluent treatment system A number of horizontal belt washers have been studied in detail for COD removal efficiency. Overall displacement ratios range from 0.985 to 0.999 depending on the number of stages and dilution factor. Results of the studies are reported and detailed examples are given.
