Pulsatile pipe flow of high percent solids (60-70% solids) black liquor, driven by an oscillating pressure gradient with a non-zero mean, is investigated. Potentials exist for saving energy by improving the pumping technology for black liquor transport. High percent solids black liquors are used in pulsating flow experiments which are compared to steady flow experiments with the same liquors. Flow rate characteristics are reported with respect to temperature, concentration, average pressure gradient and frequency of oscillation. Beneficial flow enhancement effects are found for certain cases as high as 80%. Liquors are characterised by viscometric experiments using two steady flow kinematics.
