New Concept of Ink Removal -- Solvent Flotation Deinking, 1996 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A novel ink removal method was developed using solvent as the medium for ink detachment and separation. This solvent flotation technique is based on the contaminant density rather than the particle size as used in the conventional de-inking methods. When heated above its lower critical solution temperature (> 49 C) an alkaline solution of butoxy-ethanol and water promotes ink detachment and separation from the fiber mass. The solvent treatment gave excellent ink removal rate and showed no adverse effect on fiber quality. It worked well on both dispersible and nondispersible inks.
