Mill and laboratory studies indicate that carry-over or carry-back of dissolved solids into the acid wash (A) or acid chelation (Q) stage improves manganese removal from pulp. This improvement in manganese removal may be a result of ion exchange with sodium and a poorly understood reaction between dissolved organics and cations that occurs under acidic conditions. It appears that under acidic conditions, dissolved organics irreversibly bind to metal cations forming a colloidal suspension. This irreversible reaction reduces the amount of free dissolved cations that can participate in ion exchange with the pulp fibers.
