Multiple effect evaporators must concentrate weak black liquor from the brown stock washers from a level of 13-18% solids to a level where concentrators or cascade evaporators can produce a material with high enough solids to support effective combustion in a recovery boiler. One of the main problems in evaporation, is scale formation which inhibits heat transfer into the liquor. This scale formation has been traditionally handled with water or condensate boil outs, acid washings or high pressure water cleaning. The new concept of microcrystalization of the scale prohibits deposition on the tube walls to maintain energy transfer and extending times between traditional cleanings.
