Impact of Sourcing and Sorting on Office Pack Quality, 1997 Pulping Conference Proceedings
Weyerhaeuser Recycling is involved in the sourcing and collection of about 3.7 million tons of recovered paper a year, about 25 percent of which is some type of deink grade such as old newspaper (ONP), sorted white ledger (SWL) or “office pack” (OP). Technological advances in deinking equipment and chemistry has made it possible for tissue and fine paper producers to use deink pulp generated from office pack. By its nature office pack has a high degree of variability in composition by both fiber type and degree of contamination. Office pack, also referred to as Sorted Office Paper (SOP), is a generic term used in the industry to describe a commingled grade of recovered paper, primarily sourced from office buildings, and then sorted to meet a customer specification. The Paper Stock definition of SOP is vague enough that individual mills can identify limitations on various components of the pack.
