On-Line Chip Analysis: A Tool for An Improved Kraft Pulping Process, 1997 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Utilizing a new optical system for on-line chip quality analysis has resulted in a more even and stable digester operation with more consistent kappa number and reduced wood losses. The system, called ScanChip, continuously measures the chip quality based on actual chip dimensions. The on-line analysis has made it possible to closely monitor the chip quality and learn how it affects the digesters operation. The results have shown that it is the fluctuations in the chip quality and not so much the level of pin chips and fines that cause the largest variations in the digester operation. To reduce the chip quality variations, the levels of pin chips and fines are now automatically controlled with the help of on-line chip analysis, by first screening them into a bin and then metering them via a Liwell screen into the digester chip feed.
