Oversize Chip Formation and Relationship to Chip Length, 1997 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Two investigations into chip size variation were undertaken. The first examined the overthick portion of chip samples obtained from production chippers across the South. The second measured chip thickness variation of chips made in a laboratory chipper.

The oversized fraction of chips from various production chippers were examined for atypical formation conditions. Results of the categorization of these chips are presented. Relationships between the overthick and large fines fraction, and the target chip length of the chipper, were developed.

A laboratory chipper was used to determine the relationship between chip thickness and chip length for different species. The increase in chip thickness with increasing chip length was quantified for different species.
