Friction Between Wood and Pulpstone - A Clue to Grinding?, 1997 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Wood grinding by pulpstones is considered to be a friction process due to plasticization of the amorphous wood components by the generated friction heat. the effects of grinding parameters on the friction coefficient were studied. Also the effect of a modified friction coefficient on the pulp tensile strength was clarified.

The friction coefficient µF was calculated as the ratio between the drag and compression forces (Eq. 1) as the modified friction coefficient µP was given as the ratio between the drag and compression effects (Eq. 3 b). the friction coefficient decreased by improved pulpstone dullness and elevated compression force, but increased by higher pulpstone peripheral speed. The best pulp tensile strength was obtained at low reciprocal values of µP. The grinding conditions should be selected to favour such frictional conditions that increase the fines particles.
