My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Pira International have developed a testing apparatus which measures the contaminants which will adhere to a forming fabric. The technique entraps stickies onto the forming fabric by impact with the wire. The contaminants are tagged with a cationic marker which can be stained to form a dark area. The wire is not affected by the stain. Image analysis can then be carried out on the wire, avoiding the tedious manual counting and sizing method. The results are given in terms of parts per million and count of deposited stickies per unit area.
The aim of this paper is to describe the technique, outlining the sample preparation and measurement procedures used. the benefits and potential uses of this test method will be highlighted. A typical set of results will be presented to illustrate the benefits of using the tack tester to provide information on stickies deposition characteristics.
