NIR-Based Yield Estimation in Semichemical Pulping - Mill Experiences, 1997 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A technique has been developed for rapidly estimating the yield of semichemical pulp based on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Strong correlations have been shown to exist between gravimetric yield and the NIR data recorded from high-yield laboratory pulps. Similar correlations exist between the NIR data from mill pulps and inventory- or mass balance-based mill yield calculations. Several mills have demonstrated that NIR data effectively tracks relative yield changes caused by intentional process modification. Some mills have successfully used NIR data as a process control variable in maintaining acceptable runnability. The technique is being increasingly accepted by industry and four mills currently own bench-top NIR spectrometers. This paper presents a case study that details how three of those mills use the NIR technique.
