Alkaline ammonium sulfite wheat straw pulp was compared to an oak and a maple kraft pulp. The wheat straw pulp had comparable or better average fiber lengths than the hardwoods. Through refining maple had the highest tensile index, but the wheat straw pulp was comparable to maple. The tear index of the straw pulp was less than the hardwoods. The difference in the tear strengths may be due to the higher quantity of primary fines in the wheat straw pulp. Removing the shorter fibers and fines before refining the wheat straw pulp did not greatly affect the tensile and tear strengths of the sheet.
