My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
Flax fiber is a long fiber and inherently has high strength characteristics. Flax is grown either for fiber (linen flax -primarily in Europe) or for oilseed (seed flax - primarily in N. America). Paper industry has traditionally been using the European fiber flax wastes or tow and Canadian oilseed flax fiber for making specialty papers only. Paper grades from mechanical / chemimechanical pulps using flax fiber have been cost prohibitive as flax fibers have been more expensive than wood fiber. Recently, fibers from oilseed flax have been successfully incorporated into writing and printing grade papers as well; however, at small scale. The similarities and differences between linen flax and oilseed flax, the availability of the seed flax in Canada and the efforts on decorticating the seed flax straw for incorporating into pulping are discussed in this paper.
