Wood and Paper Properties of Five Short-Rotation Popular Clones Grown in Quebec, 1997 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Five experimental hybrid poplars 15 years old grown in southern Quebec have been evaluated for their wood and papermaking properties. The hybrid poplars have a particularly high percentage of very short cells of less than 0.2mm and contain more lignin when compared with trembling aspen. The chemithermomechanical pulps produced from hybrid poplars (except for clone 3308) show inferior mechanical properties when compared to those of aspen for a given freeness, while the NSSC pulps of hybrid poplars exhibit comparatively better physical properties in comparison with the native aspen.
