My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Continuous steam explosion pulping at high pressures and low residence times has been shown to produce pulps with strength properties comparable to soda pulps, but with higher yields and lower chemical loadings. When applied to bagasse for use in bleached fine paper production, these advantages can improve the process economics. Sappi Fine Papers are the world leaders in coated woodfree sheet production, and produce bleached bagasse pulp at their Stanger mill. Testing has been performed to adapt the steam explosion pulping process to the Stanger operation. Strength, yield and brightness data are presented for steam exploded bagasse pulps produced at various chemical charges and compared versus the current Stanger operation.
