My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
The alkaline pulping conditions have been shown to have a significant influence on the reactivity of residual lignin toward oxygen bleaching. For a series of batch-cooked softwood kraft pulps, the extent of O2 delignification increased with decreasing the unbleached kappa number. Also, compared with the reference kraft pulps at similar kappa number, the high-sulfidity kraft and neutral sulfite - anthraquinone were less responsive to the O2 delignification process. The variation of alkaline pulps in the O2 delignification rate cannot be related directly to their apparent content of phenolic units alone. It appears that the overall O2 delignification efficiency may be improved by a proper combination of the alkaline cooking and O2 delignification conditions.
