Cultivation of Short Rotation Hardwoods on Westvaco Corporation's Lands in the Mississippi River Valley, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings
Because hardwood fiber is the main component of several grades of paper manufactured by Westvaco Corporation, finding relatively inexpensive ways to produce this wood in a short growth rotation is a primary interest. Westvaco Corporation manages approximately 600,000 hectares of forestland through an approach called the Ecosystem Based Multiple Use Forest Management System. Through this forest management program, Westvaco is able to meet the needs of their paper mills and the public demands for wood and paper products while maintaining productive forests for the future. Three methods used by Westvaco Corporation for growing short rotation soft hardwoods all require careful evaluation of soil conditions, moisture content, and species requirements. The three approaches are upland hardwood plantations, bottomland hardwood plantations, and a unique method called fiber farming.
