Effects of Process Closure on the Wet-End Chemistry and Productivity of Paperboard Machines, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Closing up process water loops in paper and paperboard mills has tremendous environmental appeal. Also, there are significant economic benefits to this process in terms of fiber and energy savings.

The build-up of colloidal and dissolved solids, as well as the impact of biological activity, are factors that must be considered during the implementation of white water closure. The wet-end chemistry effects of closure are significant, and if not properly addressed, can cause productivity problems.

The use of bentonite-based retention/drainage systems to control the retention of wet-end functional additives, i.e. sizing agents, pigments and dry strength products such as starch, will be shown. We will also describe the effects of process water closure and the impact of these retention systems on the wet-end chemistry and productivity of various paperboard machines.
