Fundamentals of Chlorine Dioxide (ECF) Bleaching, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

The US EPA has recently selected chlorine dioxide delignification -- "ECF" bleaching – as the technology basis for water quality standards. The BAT effluent limits of the EPA’s so-called “Cluster Rule” will require complete substitution of chlorine dioxide for molecular chlorine in the first stage of bleaching.

Chlorine dioxide reacts differently than chlorine, and bleaching strategies must be adjusted for these differences. This session is intended as a short introduction to the practice of bleaching with chlorine dioxide, examining the effects of process variables such as time, temperature, pH, and incoming pulp.
