My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
Various uses of enzymes, particularly cellulases and xylanases, in pulping and papermaking applications are reviewed. The areas of enzymatic fiber modification, and chip pretreatment are emphasized. Enzymatic fiber modification with cellulases and xylanases has been utilized for drainage improvement of recycled fibers and the reduction of refining energy required for different pulps has also been investigated. These enzymes have been applied as a chip pretreatment for both chemical and mechanical pulping applications. Fungal treatments on wood chips for refining energy reduction are compared with results from enzyme treatments on wood chips. Current work on use of enzymes to reduce mechanical pulp refining power is summarized. The economic viability of using some commercial enzymes is speculated upon in respect to cost and activity issues.
