On-Line Optical Kappa Number Measurement Enhances Bleach Plant Performance, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings
Domtar’s Cornwall mill recently implemented control strategies in the bleach plant using a new state-of-the-art method for optically measuring Kappa number. Using a Pulpstar sensor the mill was able to correlate kappa number to the sensor signal with an accuracy well within +/- 4% of lab sample tests. Once the signal was proven, a kappa factor control module was implemented providing the mill immediate with financial returns.
Soon after implementation of the control strategy, the mill experienced results including a 5% reduction in chemical usage. Improvements were also seen throughout the other stages of the bleach plant due to the reduction in variability in the first stage. Because of the successful, collaborative effort between Domtar and Honeywell the mill chose to implement the complete bleach plant control package and very quickly experienced improved results and increased efficiency in the mill.
